Passing through a stretch of road in Wisconsin I saw this late afternoon sky and came home to record it in a quick sketch. The color pallet was a reflection of the time of year and time of day. Controlling the values and color to enhance the activity above the horizon was central to this composition. Price $2900 SOLD
The tension between loose and tight, bigger vs smaller brush strokes directed the execution of this painting. Stepping back I could see the brush strokes coalesce, but up close they were fairly loose. I encourage you to view this piece at the Groveland Gallery, Minneapolis. Price $1250.
A grouping of soft maple stands as a bulwark against river floods breaking into backwaters on the St Croix River. I originally cataloged this place on plein air sessions off of the pontoon boat while fishing. We recently revisited this place and found that the tree mass was mostly gone having been broken down by subsequent spring floods. Nothing lasts forever. Price $3600 SOLD
Last November 2023 I had right shoulder surgery and my arm was immobilized for 2.5 months. I started working on a "left handed" series. Initially I found it hard to rewire my mind and make it control my left hand. Eventually the transition happened and I was able to complete 10 of these small sketches as well as finish a major commission for my church. This was made possible, I feel, by getting myself out of the way. Price $550.
This painting evolved from material developed during painting at the Door County Plein Air Festival when I last competed. I did 5 of those events starting in 2007 and won a second place in one of them. This piece uses the subtle color shift from lower light conditions. Price $2900.
Backlighting is one of the key elements of this composition. It is used to illuminate and generalize masses. Additionally the strong road shape on the right offsets the large tree grouping on the left. Balancing these energies is a typical approach to creating successful paintings. Price $2500.
On a hot day in Kenyon, MN pastel colors reflect the heavy humidity in the summer air. This piece was one of the left handed paintings I worked on during my shoulder convalescence. Up close there are heavier paint applications and brush strokes. Price $750 SOLD
In the valley where I grew up this hill side creates a long ridge and evidence of light passing through heavy clouds and weather. This piece is part of the name sake of this show which is "Somewhere Still". The idea is that we retain pieces in our minds and psyches that we once knew and lived in. Price $2500.
This morning I planned on getting out to watch the moon set at around 4:30 am. At the same time as the moon was setting, the sun began to creep up and cast light across the landscape. These two types of light create a mixture of light from the background and direct light creating shadows. Snows are blue in low light and fallow grasses turn rosy in the light. Price $3600.
